About Us

In operation for over 120 years, Newcastle Musical Theatre Company is the only amateur dramatics society to continue perform at Newcastle Theatre Royal. Comprising of over 100 members, the society rehearses for more than six months each year to stage one show at a professional standard.

Origins

Whilst records are scarce, it is believed that NMTC began life as Newcastle upon Tyne Amateur Operatic Society in 1897 with a production of 'Dorothy'. 47 years later, on Wednesday 12th May 1948, records confirm that the company held a meeting at 109 Pilgrim Street in Newcastle City Centre, just south of the stage door of the Theatre Royal.

The Post War Era

Between May 1948 and October 1949, the foundations of the organisation were laid, and a performance slot at the Theatre Royal was arranged by Albert Schofield. This seventeen-month period was likely a very nerve-wracking time, as each Board Member contributed a guinea (£1.05) to float the Company, raising a total of £10.50. The theatre’s hire charge was £650, so they agreed to share any losses equally. Fortunately, their production of Merrie England netted £871.90—an impressive result at a time when the average house cost about £1,800.

Evolution

Schofield went on to play a pivotal role in shaping the Company’s early success, producing and directing every production—except for one, which he missed due to ill health—up until 1970. His dedication and creative vision set a strong artistic standard that helped establish the Company’s reputation. The very first show, Merrie England, marked an ambitious and memorable beginning. It featured Nan Gray in the leading role of Queen Elizabeth, bringing both elegance and strength to the character, and set the tone for the high-quality performances that would become a hallmark of the Company’s future productions.

After some years growth, the company took on a new name in 2006, becoming Newcastle Musical Theatre Company. This marked the beginning of a fresh chapter, whilst still honouring its long history and roots in the local community.

The Board Of Directors

Michael Avery

President

Patricia Smith

Chairman

Pat’s first contact with NMTC was at age eleven while attending Cramlington High School, where the Headmaster, also the society’s Vice-Chairman, arranged performances of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. She sang the role of Tessa in The Gondoliers and, three years after leaving school, successfully auditioned to join the society. This marked the start of a long and devoted association with NMTC. Over the years, Pat has played many roles, including Bloody Mary in South Pacific and Aunt Eller in Oklahoma!. Supporting the society has been her lifelong passion, and through NMTC, she has gained lasting friendships, joy, and happiness.

Kate Sword

Vice Chairman and Membership Secretary

Kate joined the Newcastle Musical Theatre Company in 1999 for the production of Oklahoma! and has performed in every show since, except for the two years when she had her children. She became a board member in 2007 and has remained an active and dedicated part of the company. Highlights include performing with her two sisters and being a Laker Girl in the 2019 production of Spamalot. Her favourite musical is Billy Elliot, while her favourite NMTC productions are The Producers (2009) and Sister Act (2015). After starting out with the Gateshead Amateur Operatic Society at age eight, joining NMTC was a natural step—especially with her father already on the board. Kate loves NMTC’s warm, family-like atmosphere and has made many of her closest friends through the company. A recent highlight was seeing her son join the NMTC family as part of the backstage team for Shrek in 2025.

Pauleen Gilbert

Ken Allan

Company Secretary, Treasurer and Business Manager

Ken was invited to join NMTC over 20 years ago, to direct 'Scrooge the Musical'. An enjoyable and very successful project which remains a shining memory. Since then he has been continually involved both on and off stage in a variety of roles. Favourite acting part is OLD DEUTERONOMY in 'Cats'. He was elected Treasurer in 2008; an important role which he continues to enjoy, alongside those of Company Secretary and Business Manager. Once a director of the now dormant youth group STAGE FIRST, it is his fervent hope this will, one day, be brought back into existence.

Philip Stockley

Company Manager

Phillip joined the Newcastle Musical Theatre Company in 1992, though his love of theatre began much earlier — his first role was as a slave boy at the age of eight with Glyndebourne at Newcastle Theatre Royal. Since then, he has taken on various cameo roles and developed a lasting passion for the stage. His favourite musical is Sweeney Todd, while his favourite NMTC production is 42nd Street. He first joined NMTC at the invitation of the late Ann Chadwick, a past director, who asked him to take over as properties master for Hello Dolly after the previous team retired. Having worked with Ann through Gateshead Operatic Society, where he was properties master and vice chairman, the move was a natural one — and, as Phillip says, the rest is history. Phillip values NMTC’s reputation for producing theatre of an exceptional amateur standard. Over the years, he has served as vice chairman, chairman, properties master, and production manager, and he now continues his dedicated involvement as company manager and a member of the NMTC board of directors.

Stephen Tawse

Production Manager

Steve’s first experience working with a musical theatre group came in 2012, when he had a minor role in Sweet Charity with a local amateur society. Following this, he became a board member of two local societies and was invited to join the NMTC Board in 2020. He has had various onstage experiences, mainly playing minor parts. One of his most enjoyable roles was playing the evil property developer Mr. Pressman in a production of Our House—a role that even allowed him to sing a solo. Steve has appeared onstage with NMTC several times, most recently as the Bishop in the 2025 production of Shrek. His favourite musicals to be part of have been Sunshine on Leith, Spamalot, The Witches of Eastwick, and Shrek. Steve considers NMTC an exciting company to be part of. He loves their professional approach to everything they do and is proud to be a board member of the society.

Gary Wright

Health and Safety Officer and Safeguarding Officer

Lisa Powell

Members Representative

Lisa became part of the society in 2007 and has been a dedicated and enthusiastic member ever since. She has a true love for performing, and there’s nothing quite like stepping onto the stage at the beautiful Newcastle Theatre Royal. Whilst she has enjoyed every show she has performed in with NMTC, she especially loved The Producers due to the sheer chaos of so many parts to play and costumes to change into. She also loves singing amazing harmonies with her NMTC family.

Laura Wood

Members Representative

Laura joined the society in 2017 for The Wizard of Oz and has loved every moment on stage since. Performing, especially at the iconic Newcastle Theatre Royal, is one of her greatest passions. Show week is always a highlight of the year for her, filled with excitement and unforgettable memories. She especially enjoys welcoming new members and sharing the thrill of being part of a production. If she could choose her dream role, it would be Mary Poppins—after all, she’s practically perfect in every way!

I had the opportunity of working with NMTC on their production of Shrek. From day one it felt like a big family. The support of everyone was incredible and I was able to live out my dream of performing on the Theatre Royal stage alongside some of the most talented people I've ever met. My time with NMTC has been so special and I am so excited to see what the future holds!
